Driving Votes: Ben T.'s Blog - Archived Entry

Ben

Why am I taking a trip? What upsets me almost as much as the Bush Administration is the level of political apathy in this country. I've complained enough. It's time for me to get out there and reach people at the grassroots level before the election.

Lives in: Salt Lake City, UT. Going to: Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvannia.

About me:I'm an old-fashioned idealist who still believes he can save the world and have fulfillment at the same time.

Heating up Arizona - July 12, 2004

So we rolled into Flagstaff to find ourselves greeted by scores of angry voters! Overhearing my discussion with a Scottish man, one voter said,
"Candidates? There's only one candidate running for President and that's John Kerry!"
Another great one,
"I'd vote against Bush 10, 20 times if I could!"
Folks were progressive in Flagstaff and most were already registered. Still, strolling around downtown we managed to gather 10 new voters--only one Republican. A friendly wine store owner even invited us to register folks at his wine loft.
Many of the unregistered we asked just weren't interested in having a say in their democracy. The best quote, hands down,
"I can't vote anywhere anyway. Thank God for felony convictions!" (We did not make that one up.)

Phoenix was hot as hell. It's amazing the great work ACORN does down there in that heat. As for us, the driving was stripped from the driving votes part of our trip when the transmission dropped out. Stranded in Phoenix longer than expected, we did manage to register 33 more voters.

Now, we're at it again in Tucson. We decided to go it alone (sans ACORN) down here. More from New Mexico later. . . .
